Overview

The Sanpete valley has led a sheltered, protected life since time began. Mormons and Utes met here when Manti was settled in 1849, helping each other through a long bitter winter. After Manti was settled, other towns sprang up, running north and south, Sterling, Spring City, Ephraim, Mt. Pleasant, Fountain Green Fairview, Chester, Moroni, and many more. Scandinavians, especially Danes, soon settled in large numbers, becoming legendary for their stoic persistence, their skills as stonemasons and in other crafts, and for their stories, told in dialect, that poke fun at their own poverty and the foibles of their people. The jewel of Mormon temples was in part their achievement rising majestically at the north end of Manti. It came to symbolize the spiritual center of the peoples lives. Sanpete is a special world, filled with special people, its charm enduring undiminished into the second millennium.
